MD Team - Mid Atlantic Junior Invitational Champions

Paced the second day by a two-under par 69 by 15-year old Alex Church, the Maryland Team scored a twelve-round aggregate of 871 strokes to edge the second place Virginia Team by nineteen strokes in the Middle Atlantic Junior Invitational today at Kingsmill Resort. In addition to Church's clutch play (76-69--145), Colin St. Maxens of the Maryland Team took the individual medal with 69-72--141 while Ben Warnquist (72), Denny McCarthy (73), Matthew Brown (74) and Wes Strang (74) added the other four counting scores on Day Two in the best-six-of-eight format.

Maryland Junior Amateur champion Josh Eure scored 75 and Steven Albright added an 84. Eure noted that "you really have to play to register a counting score for this Maryland Team." The River Course at Kingsmill was played at 6,769 yards for the second day of the competition. Church took up where St. Maxens left off on Saturday with six birdies, all from short range. The Maryland Team had the low four individual scores - St. Maxens, McCarthy, Church and Eure. Urged to comment on his team's play, Captain Jack Barse, not often at a loss for words, had to gather himself before remarking: "Each of the twenty-four boys in this event was a real gentleman. I got to know many of the players last evening at the Player's Dinner. I am truly proud of the Maryland Team. Virginia brought an exceptionally strong team - as Virginia does for any competition - that demonstrated consistent play. Our players were determined to win and just played fabulous golf."
