Golf in Maryland Loses Paul Gehring, An Exemplary Servant of the Game
On February 25, 2007, Paul B. Gehring of Rising Sun, MD passed away at age 82. Paul died of complications from a fall that occurred about one month earlier. He is survived by his wife Frances and son David.
Paul Gehring turned golf professional as an assistant to Johnny Bass, PGA, at Pine Ridge Golf Club, and then worked for Joe Vaeth, who was the head PGA Professional at Clifton Park Golf Club. Shortly after his election to PGA membership in 1968, Paul became the Head PGA Professional at Chantilly Manor Country Club in Rising Sun, the club at which he served until his retirement in 1988. Paul was a Life Member of the PGA of America and an Honorary Life Member of Chesapeake Bay Golf Club – Rising Sun.
Tom Brown, the distinguished golf course superintendent at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club (formerly Chantilly Manor Country Club), recently remarked: “Paul Gehring was a great credit to the PGA of America." Paul was well-liked by all who knew him and truly represented the idea of golf as game of honor and respect for tradition.
Paul served in the U.S. Navy and was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Church, Perryville, MD, and a member of the Rising Sun American Legion Post No. 194.
