Lawson-Kim Claim Their Second Mixed Two Ball Title
DATE POSTED: 7/30/2010

The pairing of Joseph Kim-Hilary Lawson, the last of 71 teams to finish in the Maryland State Mixed Two-Ball tournament at the Members Club at Four Streams, won the annual event conducted by the organization's Women's Division with a 6-under-par 31-34--65, July 27. It marked the second title for the collegians as they had posted the same winning score three years ago at Argyle Country Club.

This time they had a three-shot cushion on Jeff Lim-Sharpe-Carly Hunt (68), who were followed by Neil-Audra McShane (69) and Rod Trump-Christy Larrimore (70). Three years ago, the winners had a four-stroke bulge on the runnerup team.

Kim, 22, a senior at Temple University, and Lawson, a University of Maryland senior who turns 21 Saturday, dovetailed well, taking turns making seven birdies, most of them on putts shorter than five feet. Two notable exceptions were a 15-footer and a 20-footer from Lawson during a five-birdie spree on the front nine. They closed it out in style with birdies at the 16th and 18th. Their only bogey was a three-putt at 11, but they saved par at the second when Kim got a bunker shot out to 10 feet and Lawson made the putt.

It was a "gotcha" experience for Kim against Lim-Sharpe. The latter won the Maryland State Public Links title last week, with Kim third, eight shots off the pace.

The Lim-Sharpe-Hunt pairing made six birdies -- the longest a 20-footer by Lim-Sharpe -- but limped home with bogeys at Nos. 17 (three putts) and 18 (missed the green). Hunt, from the Philadelphia area but now living in College Park while taking graduate studies in kinesiology at the University of Maryland, was making her first appearance in the event.

There were three net leaders at 66, headed by Mei-Lin Lu-Doug Waiters (75-9) and trailed by Sam Oshrine-Sharon Pusin (70-4), and Rick-Stacey Collins (72-6). Lu was a winner two years ago when partnered with Donald Meyer at Bulle Rock.

Perhaps the best shot of the day was one from 40 yards by Kay Tyler that found the cup for an eagle-2 at the 308-yard sixth hole. Partner Greg Bremer had put her in position with a 270-yard tee shot.
