How
Do I Get a Handicap?
Officials of the Maryland State Golf Association are often asked
"How do I get a handicap?" The USGA states
that "in order to obtain a USGA Handicap Index, a golfer
must join a golf club and post adjusted scores. These scores
are subject to peer review. After at least five scores have
been posted the club will issue a Handicap Index to the golfer
in accordance with the USGA Handicap System."
If
you do not plan to join a private club, check with a nearby
public or daily fee facility, preferably one of the more than
50 MSGA Member Clubs that are public access facilities. Most
of these facilities provide USGA Handicap Services for a modest
fee. A club/course [private or public] must be licensed to issue
a USGA Handicap Index. A list of authorized golf clubs [licensed]
is available for viewing by clicking the Licensed
Club link within the drop down menu under HANDICAPS.
